Travel and Immigration Reform Update

As we head into the summer season, several developments in Washington have the potential to significantly impact the travel industry’s efforts to welcome more international visitors to America. Most recently, the Senate this week passed a motion to proceed with debate on S. 744, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act. The bill includes many travel priorities that will work towards increasing travel to the U.S., including:

U.S. Senators Mark Kirk (R-IL), Mark Begich (D-AK), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Dean Heller (R-NV), Tim Scott (R-SC), Harry Reid (D-NV) , Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), and Mark Warner (D-VA), introduced a resolution yesterday recognizing National Travel and Tourism Week to emphasize the importance of the travel and tourism sector for the economies of communities throughout the nation. "When one in eight jobs depends on tourism and travel, this industry is an invaluable asset to our country and to Illinois," said Sen. Kirk. "This resolution acknowledges the need to prioritize and promote travel initiatives, which will create new jobs and enhance cross-cultural understanding."

“Tourism is one of the most essential industries to Alaska’s economy, employing thousands of hard-working Alaskans,” said Sen. Begich. “I am proud to join a group of bipartisan Senators to recognize the important role our travel and tourism businesses play in creating jobs and stimulating our overall economy.”

What’s the “JOLT Act?” It stands for, “Jobs Originated through Launching Travel.” The JOLT Act is bipartisan legislation that was introduced by Representatives Joe Heck (R-NV), Mike Quigley (D-IL),Mark Amodei (R-NV), David Cicilline (D-RI) and Michael Grimm (R-NY) to leverage the benefits of inbound travel to the U.S.
